Spencer Hughes 6/8/01–12/7/22
(Please feel free to leave a memory or photo in the comments below)
He enjoyed music, riding his four-wheeler, driving, taking rides, looking at muscle cars and pickup trucks, fishing and hunting, and all things wolf. He was a fan of both the St. Louis Cardinals and the St. Louis Blues.
From Spencer's Annual Showdown:
Spencer was a great buddy and friend to all. There were very few people he didn't know and none that he didn't try to get to know. Spencer was kind, empathetic, and a goof ball. He was easy to like, and some say even love. That is why in December of 2022, when he died of a heart attack at the age of 21, we all fell apart with grief. We channeled that grief into what is now known as Spencer's Annual Showdown. We had to find a way to keep his memory alive.
So why did we choose a truck and car show? Spencer loved anything with wheels. At the age of 3 he got his first motorcycle. He wouldn't stop until the battery died. No matter the weather he was outside. Around 5 he got his first four-wheeler that he shared with his brother Collin and his sister Kaytlen. By the age of 10 he was riding the four-wheeler on his own. Riding in the wind wild and free was who he was. As he got older, he moved onto motorbikes, golf carts, and even his very own Lexus. He never did receive his driver's license before he died. He was only able to obtain his learner's permit.
Spencer was born with Williams Syndrome. This is a rare genetic disorder that effects 1 in 10,000 kids. Many of these kids have multiple medical issues, learning disabilities, and many development delays. These children are also gifted with outstanding social abilities and a strong affinity for music. In Spencer's case he was also gifted with a love for wolves.
Spencer had the ability to make a bad day good for anyone. He checked on all his family and friends via phone often. At times this drove you nuts, but other times his calls, snaps, etc. made your day. However, when they are forever gone, you never knew you could miss a voice or text so much.
Spencer thought of himself as a redneck. He never cared much about what he wore. His boots were a staple in his wardrobe. He wore them with everything. He cared most about hanging with friends and family. He loved to go out with his sister for car rides with the music blaring and just be silly. As a matter of fact, he loved doing that with everyone. If he could con anyone into going out to eat, he was even happier. He just loved to be on the go.
Spencer never met a stranger. Everywhere he went he knew someone and more importantly they knew him. One summer afternoon the president of the United States flew into Litchfield. Everyone was there including the press. When the president stepped off Air Force One, he walked over to shake Spencer's hand and to say "Hello!" Immediately the press turned to me and asked, "Who is that man with Spencer?" LOL. This statement was said at his funeral by his Uncle Greg. I think this story sums up his essence.
Thanks to everyone for your continued support of the truck and car show. We appreciate you helping us keep his memory alive. This means so much to us and his family.
Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9 (Spencer lived by these words)
